Hope’s Door Presents ‘Shining Star Scholarship’ to Westlake Senior
Hope’s Door, a Pleasantville-based charity that seeks to end domestic violence and to empower survivors to achieve safety, independence and healing, recently presented is second annual “Shining Star Scholarship” to Westlake High School senior Sarah Fiegura during the 30th annual Women’s Hall of Fame and Scholarship luncheon.
Fiegura, awarded $2,000 toward her college expenses, was recognized for her outstanding leadership as president of the Westlake High School chapter of Students Terminating Abusive Relationships (STAR), a peer leadership program sponsored by Hope’s Door that promotes healthy relationships based on equality, trust and respect.
Fiegura has been part of the program since her freshman, and president of the chapter for the past two years. She spoke at the organization’s recent Teen Symposium on behalf of STAR students and encouraged other students to join in their schools. Fiegura has organized eight events this year, with more being planned. Her dedication does not end with encouraging students to participate but she also encourages peers who may be in unhealthy relationships to get help from Hope’s Door or school staff.
After graduation she plans to continue to help others. Fiegura plans to study psychology with a focus on mental health counseling and hopes to become a clinical psychologist.
Fiegura was one of 32 young women who received scholarships during the luncheon, an annual event sponsored by the Women’s Research and Education Fund. Scholarships were awarded by Avon Products, the College of New Rochelle, Lanza Family Foundation, Merrill Lynch Global Private Client Group, Stock Family Fund, Stop & Shop, Visiting Nurse Services of Westchester, The Women’s Bar Association and the Women’s Research and Education Foundation, among others.
“Sarah exemplifies the highest levels of leadership not only in our STAR program, but as a leader in her community, and more importantly, a future leader,” said CarlLa Horton, Hope’s Door executive director. “She and the other scholarship recipients are wonderful examples of women’s leadership in the young adult community here in Westchester County and we applaud their efforts.”
