Head Start to Receive $1.2 Million Federal Grant for Services in White Plains
A competitive grant for $1,202,224, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, will allow Family Services of Westchester to continue offering Early Head Start and Head Start services to White Plains children throughout the remainder of the school year.
The award was announced Monday by Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Rockland/Westchester).
“Head Start and Early Head Start programs are absolutely critical early childhood education services for our neighbors in the Lower Hudson Valley,” Lowey said. “At a time when misguided spending cuts are having real consequences for children and families around the Lower Hudson Valley, investments like this one are even more important. I am so pleased that Family Services of Westchester can continue to serve families throughout the school year.”
The grant will be used to keep current Early Head Start and Head Start programs in operation serving 280 White Plains families.
According to the Head Start website, programs provide comprehensive services to enrolled children and their families, which include health, nutrition, social, and other services determined to be necessary by family needs assessments, in addition to education and cognitive development services. Head Start services are designed to be responsive to each child and family’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage.
