Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Plans to Give Retirement Notice
Mount Pleasant Police Chief Louis Alagno informed the town board this week that he plans to submit his retirement papers later this year.
Alagno, 62, a 37-year department veteran who has spent his entire law enforcement career in Mount Pleasant, said at the June 18 board meeting that he would submit a letter in September or October giving officials notice.
Alagno, who earns $131,571 a year, joined the police force on Oct. 1, 1976, and has overseen the 40-member department since 2001.
Councilman Mark Rubeo praised Alagno and wished him a good retirement.
“You earned it,” Rubeo told Alagno.
Alagno said it was the right time for his retirement without elaborating further. He said he wanted to discuss issues regarding his decision with the board at upcoming meetings.
The town board opted against having an in-depth discussion about Alagno’s decision and the ramifications for the department last week since Supervisor Joan Maybury was absent because of an illness in her family.
On Thursday, Maybury said that under civil service law, the town will call for the police chief list from the county. Officials will interview and select a candidate from that list, she said.
In a separate move, the town board is considering increasing the department by one officer next year.
The department has been at the center of a controversy and ensuing litigation surrounding the shooting death of Pace University student D.J. Henry in October 2010.
