Sheriff’s Deputy Helps Deliver Baby
A Putnam County sheriff’s deputy helped deliver a baby girl on Wednesday after a couple on their way to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel pulled over to call 9-1-1, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
After 9-1-1 Dispatcher Robyn Tricinelli received a call from a woman explaining her daughter-in-law was in labor while heading towards the hospital on I-84 in Southeast, Tricinelli called the couple to assess the situation, the sheriff’s office stated. She was told the woman was having contractions and the husband was able to see the baby’s head, and told the couple to pull over to the side of the road.
Several deputies soon arrived on the scene including Deputy John Kerwick, a New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technician, the sheriff’s office reported. Kerwick assisted in the child’s birth, using an emergency obstetrics kit to clamp and cut the umbilical cord and suction the child’s nose, the report stated. The kit was provided by the Brewster Fire Department Ambulance and TransCare Paramedics, which also responded to the scene. The baby was then wrapped in a fresh t-shirt, and the baby, named “Francesca” and mother were taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to the sheriff’s office.
“We are blessed to have dedicated and well-trained emergency responders who work seamlessly to render emergency services to those in need,” Sheriff Don Smith said in a press release. “This is the latest example of all emergency service providers working together making our county a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
