Former Yorktown Resident Killed in New Orleans Shooting
A former Yorktown resident was shot and killed in New Orleans on April 28 by a homeowner who reportedly feared for his life.
According to published reports, Joseph Cahill,40, a well-respected lighting designer who had been touring with the band Leftover Salmon and remained in the area to attend Jazz Fest, was bloody and upset and sought help in a home hear the New Orleans Fair Grounds when he was gunned down.
Cahill, who grew up in Yorktown, moved to Colorado in 1995 after graduating from SUNY Oswego and worked in the music industry. According to his obituary, Cahill was “a free-spirited loving and generous soul” who had a love of life, a passion for music and a terrific sense of humor. He also enjoyed spending time with his large, close-knit family and many friends.
He is survived by his 16-year-old daughter Cassidy and her mother Andrea Rossin; his mother Regina Cahill; sisters Pat McCullough, Anne Johansen and Regina Garrant and their spouses; brothers Ken and Kevin Cahill and their spouses; and his beloved nieces and nephews. His father, George Cahill, a retired New York City police officer, died in March.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the old stone church of St. Patrick’s on Church Place in Yorktown. Donations may be made to the Joe Cahill Memorial Music Award Fund c/o Wells Fargo, 1937 Commerce Street, Yorktown Heights, NY10598.
