Lake Carmel Fireman Killed in Truck Crash in Beekman
Early Sunday morning, a Lake Carmel fireman died in a fatal vehicular accident in Beekman, according to the New York State Police.
On April 7, at about 1:45 a.m., state troopers were dispatched by Dutchess County 911 to an auto accident on Beekman Road, in the Town of Beekman, in which a vehicle had overturned with injured persons trapped inside the car.
A preliminary police investigation indicated that Marcus E. Sorbellini, a 39-year-old Lake Carmel resident was traveling northbound on Beekman Road in his 2006 GMC pick-up truck. Troopers believe that Sorbellini was north of Baker Road and traveling at an unsafe speed when he failed to negotiate a curve.
Sorbellini’s truck left the roadway, struck a guide rail and then returned to the roadway where it overturned, according to preliminary reports.
Troopers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians from the Beekman Fire Company responded to the crash scene and removed two occupants who were trapped inside the vehicle.
Sorbellini suffered severe head and neck trauma during the crash. He died at the crash scene.
His passenger, Kristen J. Kelly-Gruber, a 37-year-old Carmel resident, was conscious and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie by Beekman Emergency Medical Services.
Reports indicate that both persons were wearing their seat belts.
It is not known at this time if drug or alcohol use played a role in the crash. An investigation into the crash is continuing.
Sorbellini was a lieutenant for the Lake Carmel Fire Department. He also sat on its board of directors.
Sorbellini worked for Verizon as a manager in Poughkeepsie.
Sorbellini leaves his wife Jennifer and their four daughters Samantha, Alyssa, Madison and Taylor. He is also survived by his two sisters Daniela and Carla.
