Renovations Coming to Several Local Metro-North Stations
If you notice several local Metro-North stations with a spiffy new look later this spring, your eyes won’t be deceiving you.
The railroad is scheduled to begin performing a series of minor renovations to improve aesthetics as part of its enhancement program that begins this Monday, April 1, weather permitting.
One crew will begin at the Crestwood station in Yonkers before working its way up the line to the North White Plains station. Another crew will start in Pleasantville and will be working its way southward, including stops at the Hawthorne and Valhalla stations.
Terrence McCauley, manager of government and community relations for Metro-North, said at least 28 different items will be addressed. For example, all surfaces that are painted will get a fresh coat of a new color–“historic green.” Other work will include replacement of all recycling containers; repainting the “Watch the Gap” stenciling; repairing gutter and leader pipes; replacing windows at the stations that have been defaced by graffiti; removal and cleaning of all light fixture lenses and installation of high efficiency LED bulbs; replacement, as needed, of floors in station elevators that are used by commuters; repair or replacement of shelter and overpass heaters; and removal or repair of newspaper boxes.
Work on each station will take between 30 and 60 days, said Mount Pleasant Supervisor Joan Maybury.
Maybury remarked that the renovations are desperately needed. She said the train stations in Mount Pleasant have not been painted in 20 years.
“It’s been a long time coming,” she said of the planned improvements.
