White Plains New Year’s Eve Family Spectacular
The city of White Plains in cooperation with the White Plains Business Improvement District will once again ring in the New Year with a grand party on Main Street between Court Street and Renaissance Square.
This free outdoor event will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, and will feature Celebration Entertainment DJ music from 10 to 11 p.m., followed by a musical performance beginning at 11 p.m. by The Showtime Dance Band.
The excitement peaks with a crowd countdown, illuminated ball drop, and a midnight fireworks display by the Zambelli Company.
Mayor Tom Roach has invited families to come and enjoy the fun. Between 15,000 and 20,000 people are expected this year.
“White Plains is the place to be on New Year’s Eve. The City’s New Year’s Eve Family Spectacular has become a fun and exciting tradition for so many who live in White Plains and throughout Westchester County,” Mayor Roach said. “I am looking forward to another successful event.”
Kevin Nunn, executive director of the White Plains BID said he had done his research and the New Year has been welcomed in every January 1 since the time of Julius Caesar who established the celebration in honor of the god Janus who looks both forward and back.
The month of January was named for Janus and is the time when we too look back on the past year and forward with hope and anticipation to the next, Nunn said.
Nunn also explained that the fireworks display, which lasts for several minutes, is packed with 10,200 shells, making the entire presentation like a grand finale from beginning to end.
