Sports Round Up: White Plains Girls Lose to Ursuline 5-0 at Home

White Plains Girls

On Saturday the White Plains Tigers took on Ursuline at Highlands and lost by the score of 5-0. With the loss their record dropped to 3-6-1 this fall.

“I think for a young team they’re maturing,” said Tigers head coach Carlos Meija about the way his team is progressing this season. “They gave a few games away which is a sign of a young team. Other than the Scarsdale game in which they got blown out they have competed in every one and actually had chances to win every game.”

Meija believes that Tori Hamilton has become one of the leaders of his young team in 2012.

“I think overall that one person I can identify as stepping up and playing above her level in a position that she is not familiar with is Tori Hamilton,” said Meija.

The Tigers according to Meija have won enough games to qualify for the Section 1 tournament and he believes his team can win a few more games in the final weeks of the season so they can try to improve their seeding in the tournament.

Last year the Tigers lost in the first round of the Section 1 Tournament. Meija believes that a goal for his team is to try to advance to the second round of the tournament.

White Plains Boys

Last week the White Plains Tigers only had one match and they beat the Scarsdale Raiders 1-0. Their lone goal in the game was scored by Shiloh Alexander. Omar Figueroa had the assist on Alexander’s goal. With the victory the Tigers have a record of 10-1-1.

“Overall I don’t think we played very well,” said Tigers head coach Marcel Galligani about the match versus the Raiders.  “I thought we struggled a little bit in the first half. We came back in the second half. We came back a little bit stronger and played much better quality soccer.”

This week the Tigers will play home versus New Rochelle on Monday, at Mount Vernon on Tuesday and Thursday play home against a very skilled Mamaroneck squad.

Good Counsel Girls

The Cougars defeated Preston 4-1 last Wednesday. They got goals from Colleen Wall, Jasmin Joseph and Nina Kenny scored two goals both during the second half. Starting goalie Maeve Power had eight saves in the Cougars’ victory.

TENNIS

White Plains

It has a wonderful fall season for the Tigers. They captured the league title under first year coach Sue Adams. The Tigers’ league consists of Ardsley, Solomon Schechter, Irvington, Tuckahoe and Mount Vernon, Dobbs Ferry and Woodlands.

This fall the postseason for the Tigers tennis team will be significantly different with a one-week inter league tournament beginning on Tuesday. This tournament will feature the top four teams from the Tigers’ league and top four from another league. The conference tournament that focuses on individuals more than team results will follow a week later.

Adams will send two doubles-teams to the conference tournament next week. They are Mary Clare O’Meara and Olivia Bauer and the other team is Tess D’Arcy and Kate Bettino.

CROSS COUNTRY

White Plains Boy and Girls

It was a bittersweet league meet for the Tigers. A year ago both the boys and girls team won the league championships. Unfortunately neither team was able to defend their titles in 2012. Liza Gellerman ran a strong race and earned All-League Honors.

Chris Cardon returning to competition after a brief illness finished first in the boy’s race. He and William Garrison earned All-League Honors.

White Plains Boys head coach Fred Singleton is also very impressed with Will Garrison this season.

 

“Will is kind of the heart and soul of the team. If you were to ask any of the kids who is the kid that is most a cross-country runner, he would get 99 percent of the vote. He is a guy who likes to go mix it up and run these long distances. He is a fan of the sport. He loves going out to run. He is just a joy to coach. You would wish that you had a whole team of Will Garrisons because he loves getting out there and to run,” said Singleton.

 

Good Counsel Girls

The Cougars finished 7th out of the 16 teams in the junior varsity race at the Bobcat Invitational.  The five Cougars runners competed in a race with a total of 59 girls. Here is how they finished:

Good Counsel’s Freshman team finished first in their race at the Bobcat Invitational.

 

There were a total of 34 girls in this race and the results on how the Cougars finished are as follows:

The Hackley School

Athletes of the Week

1. Zach Morant scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Dalton this past week. He currently has seven goals and two assists on the season. Zach is also a captain and a three-year varsity starter for the Hornets.

2. Joey McDermott has been pivotal at the quarterback position on the varsity football team. In his last two contests Joey has scored six touchdowns, two passing and four rushing. He went 18 for 23 for 270 yards in the air and rushed for 155 yards on 18 carries.

3. Gabby Urkin has stepped her game up on the tennis courts. She recently moved up from 2nd to 1st doubles and has done a tremendous job for the team. She recently defeated a tough team with her partner 6-4, 6-4. In addition to playing incredibly well and hitting outstanding shots, Gabby’s team spirit and enthusiasm was key to the team’s success.

4. Stefanie Frolo has played incredible defense for the girl’s varsity soccer team this year. She is often marked on the opponent’s best offensive threat and is crucial to the team and their 7-1-1 record.
