AMVETS Bridge Over Reservoir to Reopen Wednesday
Six weeks ahead of schedule, the AMVETS Bridge over the Croton Reservoir on the northbound Taconic State Parkway is expected to reopen for morning commuters Wednesday.
State Department of Transportation officials, along with local and state elected leaders and a crowd of hard hats, celebrated the completion of the $26 million project Tuesday.
“This truly is a momentous occasion,” said DOT Commissioner Joan McDonald. “This project shows when we work together and work as a team we all benefit.”
The bridge was closed to traffic in late March and was not projected to reopen until November 9. It’s the first time the 81-year-old overpass, which opened the same year as the George Washington Bridge and the Empire State Building and carried two lanes of traffic in each direction, was refurbished since 1989. The work is anticipated to extend the life of the bridge for 50 years.
“It’s great that it’s open early. It will take a burden off our local roadways,” said Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace. “We’re grateful you made this investment.”
