Castellano Wins Republican Primary for Put. Co Leg. District No. 7
Receiving the backing from the Putnam County Republican establishment, Southeast resident Joseph Castellano was the winner in Tuesday’s primary to become the nominee to run in the Nov. 6 general election for Putnam County Legislative District No. 7.
District No. 7 comprises portions of the Hamlet of Mahopac and the Town of Southeast, and the Village of Brewster.
According to unofficial results posted to the Putnam County Board of Elections website, Castellano garnered 75 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Mahopac resident and former Carmel Town Councilman Norman Marino, received 24 percent of the vote.
Castellano has lived in Southeast for 16 years and is the program coordinator for the legal division at the Westchester County Clerk’s Office, where he has worked since 1996.
Since 2004, Castellano has sat on the Town of Southeast Zoning Board of Appeals.
In addition to running on the Republican line, Castellano also will appear on the Conservative Party line in the general election in November.
While Castellano received the endorsement of the county Independence Party, his now opponent in the general election, Democrat Paul Morini, who mounted a write-in challenge, may have prevailed in the primary to appear on that line in the general election.
While the actual names on the write-in ballots were not known as of Tuesday night, Castellano received 32 percent of the votes in the Conservative Party primary, while write-in ballots amounted to 68 percent of the vote.
