Merchants Purchase Yellow Flags to Beautify Mount Kisco
In an effort to make the village more attractive, yellow flags purchased by local business owners have recently appeared on poles throughout Mount Kisco.
The board unanimously agreed to a plan in May proposed by Cathy Deutsch, owner of Tiger Lily boutique on Main Street, to place the flags in the downtown. Deutsch, a member of the Main Street Merchants Association, told the village board in the spring that she came up with the idea for the three-foot-by-five foot sunshine yellow flags in the village’s shopping areas.
“I saw how lovely the town looked on St. Patrick’s Day,” when flags appropriate to that day lined the streets, she said.
Deutsch said she hoped residents and merchants would feel that Mount Kisco is “a happening village” and be enticed to shop and set up businesses in the community.
The flags cost $15 each and were paid for by the merchants.
As part of the agreement with the trustees, the flags can remain until as late as Veterans Day when flags marking the holiday will be placed on poles.
“It’s nice to see something decorative,” said Village Trustee Joseph Morreale.
Morreale, who recently returned from an overseas trips, noted the flags’ emergence at the Aug. 13 village board meeting and wondered why they contained no messages.
“The merchants want to brighten up the village,” Mayor Michael Cindrich replied.
Trustee Jean Farber said she supported the merchants’ flag program.
“People are noticing,” Farber said. “I’d love to see more happen with this idea.”
