Ossining residents camped out the Anne M. Dorner Middle School in the village Saturday night to fight back against cancer with the annual Relay for Life event. Led by co-chairs Lizzie Bly and Monica Mitchell, the event is designed around frequent walks around the track, meant to symbolize cancer patients’ journeys. In addition to survivors, caregivers and other volunteers, the event also attracted Ossining Union Free School District Superintendent Phyllis Glassman and Ossining Mayor William Hanauer, who took a break from his wedding weekend to address the event. The top fundraiser, Bly said, raised more than $5,000. At 10 p.m. Saturday night, the Relay for Life luminary ceremony took place — a ritual that uses colored flash lights to symbolizes the different reasons people “relay.” The event also included a “tent city” that featured bake sales, raffles and other fundraisers.
